Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver on Saturday at the request of US on suspicion of violating Iran sanctions. Most details are not being revealed at the moment due to a publication ban at Meng’s request.
Meng is the daughter of Huawei’s founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei who served as a People’s Libertarian Army engineer in the past and his connection to the Chinese Communist Party has resulted in the suspicions of US intelligence agencies.
This isn’t the first time Meng is facing issues with sanctions. According to Reuters Meng served as a board member of Skycom Tech a company offering to sell HP equipment to Iran in late 2010. In fact 13 pages of the proposal were marked as “Huawei Confidential”. Although the deal never went through but could have resulted in a lot of trouble for Huawei and Skycom.
Issues between the US and Huawei have existed for years now. American officials have banned the use of Huawei devices in the government, they’ve have also advised other countries to do the same. However arresting one of the highest-ranking executives of the company will surely result in some serious tensions between the US and Huawei.
